Principal’s Community Update 9/19/22

Morning Playground • Starting this week, we ask that all parents/guardians please remain at gate when dropping off children. Allow/encourage children to walk to class lineup on their own. Students can practice their independence and Muir staff can better monitor safety on school grounds.

Coffee Monday • Join us on Monday, September 26 for an informal, PTA-sponsored coffee chat in our Covered Play Area from 7:45-8:30 a.m. Get to know other parents while enjoying a free drink!

Late for School? We will start counting tardies on student records beginning this week. Please make every effort to have your child here on time. Important subject matter is covered right from the start!

School Picture Day • Class Acts Portraits will be on site Thursday, Sept 29 (makeups Nov 3) to take each child’s picture. Ordering info will be sent home on Picture Day, and ordering begins AFTER Picture Day. You will be able to view pictures before ordering. Building Construction & Upgrades • Muir is part of SPS’ upgrades plan, which includes a four classroom addition with child care support spaces on the NE corner of the building, renovation of the open-plan classroom on the third floor to three classrooms, new glazing on second and third floors of 1971 classroom addition to get better classroom daylight, replacement/upgrade of the fire alarm system, replacement/upgrade of fire suppression system, replacement of the existing lighting with LED lighting, replacement/upgrade the existing electrical service for the entire building (including expanding the main electrical room), replacement of water heater, building modernization of the loading dock and site development to add modular playground equipment, bicycle parking, and right of way curb ramp work. The scope of the construction will be performed while the campus is occupied. Construction Start: Summer 2024 / Construction Complete: Summer 2025

Affordable Internet Access • The SPS Technology Dept. recommends that students and families in need of internet access apply to the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). The ACP provides a discount of up to $30 per month toward internet service for eligible households and up to $75 per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands. A household is eligible for the ACP if the income is at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, or if a member of the household meets at least one of these criteria below: Based on your household income, or if you or your child or dependent participate in certain government assistance programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, WIC, or other programs. Family Connectors University • Now enrolling for the fall term! All SPS families are invited to join North Seattle College’s Family Connectors University (FCU), a family-focused online course designed to help parents and caregivers support their child’s learning and growth. Topics include: Helping your child with learning, Social Emotional Learning ideas for home, becoming a supportive partner at your school, helping your child with ‘big emotions’, supporting your child with reading and math, and talking to kids about race, racism, and antiracist actions. Take this course in real-time or attend offline at a time that works for you. The class takes place online via Zoom for 10 weeks beginning Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 6-7 pm. Parents can participate synchronously or asynchronously, as sessions will be recorded.
