Principal’s Community Update 1/27/23

School Tours – Families who are new to John Muir may participate in our final information session/tour on Mon., Jan. 30, from 12:30-2:00. Thank you, Kate Schueler, for organizing and serving as JM Tour Guide!

Spirit Day! To add a little sunshine to midwinter, students and staff are invited to wear pajamas or sweats to school on Wed., Feb. 1. No stuffies, blankets, or toys. It’s a regular school day with just a little added spirit!

New Playground Slide – Our big slide was cracked and nonfunctional. Art teacher Julie Trout wrote a GoFundMe to secure the funds needed to replace this important playground piece! Be on the lookout for our new slide in the coming months. Thank you, Ms. Trout!

Spring School Picture Day –Thurs., Feb. 9. Individual student pictures will be taken only for students who came to John Muir after Nov 3. Whole-group pictures will be taken for every class.

Black History Month – Every teacher is planning his/her own way of sharing/celebrating Black History through a variety of activities. Anisha Noriega has been working hard to plan events for our community: Mayor Bruce Harrell visits John Muir, Fri., Feb. 3, 9:30-10:20; NAAPID (Natl African American Parent Involvement Day), Mon., Feb. 13, 8:30-2:00; Black Lives Matter at School Week, Feb. 6-10; Black Love Dance, Wed., Feb. 15, 5:00-7:00 pm. Questions? Contact aknoriega@seattleschools.org  Thank you, Ms. Noriega!

Midwinter Break – All SPS schools will be closed February 20-24.

Open Enrollment for School Choice begins Wednesday, Feb. 1 – Families of students interested in attending a school other than their assigned school need to submit a School Choice form on The Source starting Wednesday, Feb. 1. Open Enrollment for School Choice runs Feb. 1 – 28 which gives students a request but does not guarantee assignment. More information is available on the Open Enrollment for School Choice webpage.

New Construction at John Muir – There’s a project in the planning stages, adding early learning classrooms, upgrading 3rd floor classrooms, and other improvements. If you would like to be part of the School Design Advisory Team (SDAT), let me know amhaider@seattleschools.org  Not everyone who expresses interest will be on the committee, but the architect wants to hear different voices.

Upcoming Road Closures at Rainier & Walden – Starting as soon as today, crews will be working to saw cut and remove roadway panels ahead of pouring to replace the roadway. S Walden St will be closed both east and west of the intersection with Rainier Ave S. Detours will be in place. The street is expected to re-open Fri., Feb. 3rd, but is subject to weather delays. In addition to this roadwork, crews will be preparing signals for a full trolley shutdown Sat., Jan. 28th, where crews will be installing signal arms. More info about the upcoming road closure, or to keep up to date on upcoming work by signing up for email updates
