Student Support Services at John Muir

Hello John Muir Families!

I am so happy to be in my 15th year as your school counselor. In my position, I am fortunate to be able to serve in many different roles! Here are a few things that occupy my time: First, I am our McKinney-Vento (MKV) building point of contact. The district’s MKV program provides resources to students and families experiencing homelessness. Homelessness can include couch surfing or being doubled up with others due to hardship. Second, I am our Student Intervention Team (SIT) Coordinator. SITs are team meetings that we hold weekly to brainstorm ways to help students reach their maximum potential. Anyone (staff or family member) can request a SIT meeting when a concern arises. Additionally, I am our Section 504 Building Coordinator. Section 504 is designed to eliminate disability discrimination in programs and activities that receive Federal funds (in this case, a public school). Any school-aged student who has a mental or physical impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity qualifies under Section 504. This means that the student has the right to receive accommodations and/or related aids in order to participate in and benefit from the District’s education program.

The most important part of my job is to support the students and families at John Muir so if there’s any additional way that I can help to do that, please bring it to my attention. For example, I can help with setting up counseling services, getting a new backpack, or having a food bag sent home on Fridays. I love my job and the wonderful students, families, and staff members that I have the privilege of connecting with every day. I am a strong believer in home-school collaboration so please never hesitate to contact me with any question or concern.

Warmly,

Susan (Shorr) Wong
