Principal’s Community Update 10/3/22
Back to School Night • All families are invited to join us at Back to School Night on Thursday, October 14th, from 4:30-6:00 pm. Families may tour the building and attend their child’s classroom for a brief presentation highlighting the curriculum for the school year. Children must be accompanied by a parent and remain with parent (playground not supervised) for this event.
Welcome New Office Assistant • We are delighted to welcome Helina Gessese to our office team as our new Office Assistant! Helina has been a valued member of John Muir community for many years and we’re so glad that she will continue in a new capacity to help run the office smoothly.
Student Drop-off and Pick-up • For the morning drop-off, we ask that all parents/guardians please remain at gate when bringing their children to school. Allow/encourage children to walk to class lineup on their own. Students can practice their independence and Muir staff can better monitor safety on school grounds. For the afternoon pick-up, when the first bell rings (2:25) all children will stand in their class lineup area with their teacher. Students will remain in their class lines unless they have a Walker pass (form must be signed by parent and on file with teacher) or until parent walks to lineup to escort them off playground. A more detailed plan will be shared once our new traffic pattern is in place.
Substitute Shortage • When a classroom teacher is out of the building and there is no sub available, Muir has implemented the Buddy Class system. This means that a child may be spending the day with a small group of his/her own classmates in a different classroom either at their grade level or one grade level away. It’s not possible for us to inform all families of this plan on the day that it happens, but please know we will do everything we can to help students understand what we’re doing and why before shifting them into another teacher’s room for the day.
Excellent Resource for Families • The Source is Seattle Public Schools’ online communication tool that gives parents, guardians and students access to schedules, attendance, assessment scores, paying the $25 technology fee and more! Please be sure you are utilizing this valuable resource.
