Including All Families:  Special Education at Muir

Muir has a fantastic special education program!  We are an inclusion program, and we believe every child deserves an excellent education every day.  We also respect and celebrate different learning styles, and we believe that having children with different needs in our classrooms enriches all of us.

Muir has 2 full-time Special Education teachers and 4 Instructional Assistants who teach in our Resource and Access programs.  We also have a Speech Language Pathologist, an Occupational Therapist, and a Physical Therapist who provide additional services.

The Resource and Access Programs provide two levels of support for children with special academic or social emotional needs at Muir:

Resource - Resource services are intended to provide specially designed instruction to students with mild to moderate intensity in their special education instructional needs. These services support students who benefit from spending most of their instructional time in general education settings with targeted support. But, services may be provided in any setting, based on the individual IEP.

Access - Access services are intended to provide specially designed instruction to students with more intensive academic and functional special education needs. These services support students who are able to make progress on their IEP goals while spending most of their instructional time, including specially designed instruction, in general education settings with a range of supports.  Because adult-student staffing ratios are higher, students receive slightly more support than is provided under the resource model.  This program has allowed us to provide additional supports to students already attending Muir and we have also been able to welcome new families qualifying for this program to the Muir community.

If you have questions about our programs or you want ideas for talking with your children about different learning styles and challenges, please let us know.  We want everyone to feel included and comfortable at John Muir Elementary.

In addition to a strong instructional team, we are fortunate to have an active parent community at Muir.  One of our parents has volunteered to start a special education parent networking group for Muir families that will meet to share ideas and strategies for supporting your children and for navigating the special education process.  If you are interested in joining this group, please contact Kelly Moody at kellyarmoody@gmail.com.

Kids Co. at John Muir is the child care provider serving the vibrant John Muir Elementary learning community. A participant in the Seattle Public Schools Community Alignment Initiative, Kids Co. at John Muir’s programming dovetails and extends the school day into non-school hours, infusing learning with the vitality of play, the strength of good companionship, and enriching confidence-building activities.

The center’s teachers follow the emergent curriculum approach in their work with kids. This orientation emphasizes the students’ interests and curiosity, in combination with the teachers, as the shapers of the curriculum. A key strength of this approach is that it encourages children to ask questions and actively explore the things in life that captivate their curiosity and imagination. Kids Co. at John Muir’s use of the emergent curriculum also fits well with John Muir Elementary’s inquiry-based science curriculum.

Student Support Services

My name is Susan Shorr and I am the Student Support Specialist at John Muir.  I am so happy to be in my fourth year at this wonderful school!  My role as the Student Support Specialist involves working individually with students who are struggling with academics or experiencing social or emotional challenges.  I teach Steps to Respect/Second Step in all of our 16 classrooms in order to increase students’ emotional intelligence, anger management skills, friendship skills, and anti-bullying skills.  Additionally, I am John Muir’s Section 504 coordinator, run the Penny Harvest program, serve as the Girls on the Run liaison, help with Safety Patrol, head the Muir Mediators, and lead our school SIT (Student Intervention Team).

A SIT is a meeting that is held at school 1-3 times a week when there is a concern about a particular student.  The concern may be in regards to academics, behavior, health, attendance, etc.  Our SIT team includes parent(s)/guardian(s), Principal, Head Teacher, Nurse, Family Support Worker, Student Support Specialist, Resource Teacher, School Psychologist, Classroom Teacher, and any other support staff, as needed.  Any staff member or family member may request a SIT meeting when a concern arises.  Our time during the SIT meeting is spent discussing the student’s strengths, talking about why the request for the meeting was made (the concern/s), researching if there have been any interventions done in the past to help with the concern/s, and brainstorming as a group what can be done from that moment forward to help the student be as successful as possible in school.

I love all of the things that I get to do in my job as the Student Support Specialist.  My favorite part though is getting to know all of the students and families.  Therefore, please keep me updated on how things are going and if you have any concerns (and I can do the same for you).  You can reach me by email, on the phone, or stop by my office (across from the main office).  I hope that we can all work together as a team this year to ensure that each student has the opportunity to reach his or her maximum potential.

Sincerely,

Susan Shorr
